Trinamool threatens to sue Tata

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA : The Trinamool Congress will move a motion of breach of privilege in the West Bengal Assembly and file a defamation suit against Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata Group, "unless he immediately apologises" for his recent remarks, Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

In an interview to a television channel Mr. Tata said ``some of our competitors are also fuelling some of this fire," referring to the agitation against the proposed car manufacturing project at Singur in Hooghly district. The agitation, he reportedly said, was "... not just political."

Senior Trinamool leaders then said the remark was "insulting" to the party, which had "nothing to do with the competitors of the Tatas."

"We have given him [Mr Tata] a one-week deadline to apologise for the comment, which is targeted against our political party as well as the committee behind the agitation, or come up with proof to substantiate his charge," said Mr. Chatterjee. "While the privilege motion will be moved by our legislators, the defamation suit will be filed at an individual level." Saugata Roy, another senior leader, told a Trinamool Congress rally here there was no question of the party sitting for talks with the Government, unless prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr. PC, now in force at Singur, were withdrawn.

On the health of Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee, who is convalescing in a nursing home here after she broke her 25-day hunger strike against the land acquisition process for the Singur project. Mr. Chatterjee, quoting doctors, said, "She should be all right, but not before next week."
