HYDERABAD: Enhancement of the capacity of Pothireddypadu head regulator again came into focus on Tuesday with Telugu Desam Party demanding immediate halt to the works and the CPI supporting the Government stand. Addressing a press conference, N. Janardhan Reddy and E. Dayakar Rao, deputy leader and secretary respectively of Telugu Desam Legislature Party said the works should be kept in abeyance till the Government announced its irrigation water policy, constituted an expert committee and convened an all-party meeting. The proposal had divided people on regional and district lines but Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was stubborn and wanted to benefit his native Kadapa district at the expense of existing ayacut in Nalgonda, Khammam, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam, they added. They ridiculed the meeting convened by APCC president K. Keshav Rao saying the issue could not be treated as the exclusive concern of the Congress. The other political parties too were equally concerned and they needed to be involved besides the people who are going to suffer.
`Reasons explained'
On the other hand, CPI State Secretary K. Narayana supported the Government's decision saying it had explained the reasons for increase in the capacity at an all-party meeting earlier. It was surprising that some political parties were now objecting to it. He told reporters that the increase in height would not have any impact on the release of water for the Kalwakurthy and Valigonda projects from the Srisailam project, as water was drawn at much lower levels. With the present height of Pothireddypadu head regulator, it was difficult to provide water to Kandaleru, Galeru Nagari and Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR), he added. Diversion of water from Pothireddypadu would also help in preventing desertification of Anantapur district, he said.
