Clear-cut policy sought to protect water bodies

CHENNAI : Exnora International, a voluntary organisation, has appealed to the State Government to evolve a clear-cut policy for the protection of water bodies in and around the city.

In a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Exnora founder M.B.Nirmal recalled that the city was surrounded with lakes and there were nearly 3,000 water bodies in Chengalpattu district. But the number had dwindled during the years and the water holding capacity of the remaining lakes had also shrunk.

He listed several suggestions, including research on the feasibility of interlinking water bodies in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts for a permanent solution to Chennai's drinking water crisis. Desilting and deepening the water bodies to enable groundwater recharge in the neighbouring areas was also a suggestion.

Alleging that local bodies dumped solid waste into water bodies, Mr.Nirmal said the Government could introduce zero waste management in panchayats and municipalities to protect the lakes.
