TO BE UNDER SURVEILLANCE: At three different points on the Nehru Street close circuit cameras are to be installed.
PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry police have mooted a plan to install closed circuit cameras in the town as part of city surveillance. The first surveillance system would cover the entire Nehru Street, sources in the police told The Hindu . As a first step three cameras would be installed at strategic points in the highly-congested Nehru Street. Each camera would cover a distance of up to 300 meters. "The plan is in the initial stages and we are keen to have the system in place before the end of this financial year," the official said. The police have already studied the city surveillance system established by their counterparts in New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. The source added that cameras would have in-built mechanism to transmit pictures to the control room, which would monitor it 24 hours a day. It would also record the pictures. A control room would be set up at the Traffic Police station in Nehru Street. The police believe that it would help in monitoring traffic, crimes, handling crowd in congested areas and recording incidents like vehicle theft, chain snatching, eve-teasing and robbery. Special focus would be to scan spots near commercial establishments and banks, the official added. "This would also help the police reduce the manpower patrolling the commercial areas and can re-deploy them for patrolling in residential colonies," the officer said.
