ICC confirms Pawar's nomination

Dubai: The International Cricket Council on Tuesday confirmed receiving nominations from India's Sharad Pawar and England's David Morgan for contesting elections for the post of the next ICC President.

"The nominations deadline for the post of next ICC President passed on December 31 and the ICC can confirm that it has received two candidates for the position," it said in a press release here.

"Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board David Morgan and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India Sharad Pawar have been nominated to succeed current ICC President Percy Sonn when his term ends," the press release added.

A new system for appointing the ICC President was put in place in June 2005. A nominations committee was appointed which would meet shortly to consider the nominations before making its recommendation to the next ICC Executive Board meeting in March 2007.The Board will, in turn, make its recommendation to the ICC Annual Conference in London next June where voting will take place. In order for a candidate to be successfully voted in as ICC President, he must secure support from two-thirds of the ten Full Members at the annual conference.

The ICC Nominations Committee consists of Dr. A.C. Muthiah (India and Sri Lanka), Bob Merriman (Australia and New Zealand), Mueen Afzal (Bangladesh and Pakistan), Stephen Camacho (West Indies and England), John Blair (South Africa and Zimbabwe) and Imran Khwaja (Associates and Affiliates).

Current ICC President Sonn began his two-year term at the ICC Annual Conference in 2006. The Board has the option of extending Sonn's term to a third year. If not, his successor will take office at annual conference 2008. — PTI
