Party will ensure Congress defeat, says Ramachandra Gowda

MADIKERI: Minister for Science and Technology and Kodagu district in-charge, Ramachandra Gowda, said here on Tuesday that the aim of BJP was to defeat the Congress in the forthcoming elections to the urban local bodies in the State.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Gowda said the BJP would go all out to defeat the Congress, including considering a tie-up with the Janata Dal (S), its coalition partner in the State. He was in Virajpet earlier and here today to explore ways and to prepare the party for elections to the four civic bodies, town panchayats of Virajpet, Somwarpet, Kushalnagar and Madikeri City Municipal Council.

The basic aim of the BJP would be not to allow the Congress gain control over the civic bodies Mr. Gowda clarified. Chief Minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy, had made it clear that the issue of forging electoral understanding would be left to the local party units in the State, he added.

He had a discussion with the senior party leaders and the two MLA's here on chalking out a game plan for facing the elections in Kodagu. In Madikeri and Virajpet constituencies, the BJP had a strong base and support.

`Jamma Bane' issue

Mr. Gowda, Madikeri MLA, K.G. Bopaiah and Virajpet MLA, H.D. Basavaraj, said the Chief Minister had agreed to consider the issue of Jamma Bane and tree rights. Mr. Bopaiah and Mr. Basavaraj clarified that the controversial circular issued by the State Revenue Secretary, S.M. Jamdaar, would be `kept in abeyance' till a decision was taken at the Cabinet.
