BSES bulb scheme extended

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Having sold over 1.5 lakh CFL bulbs under its "buy one, get one free" scheme that purportedly would lead to a saving of nearly 10 MW of power, the power distribution company BSES has announced extension of the scheme up to March 31.

Under the scheme, launched in association with Indo-Asian Fusegear Limited, the sale of the CFLs was undertaken from October 24 at 52 special kiosks and select cash counters across the BSES distribution areas.

According to the discom, the maximum number of CFLs -- over 55,000 of them -- have been sold so far in West Delhi, followed closely by 50,000 in South Delhi. Most people have shown a preference for the 15-watt CFLs that are said to be equivalent to 75 watt of normal bulbs.

Substituting the normal incandescent bulbs with these low-consumption, high-brightness output CFLs has already led to saving of power enough to run three average shopping malls in Delhi and lead to an energy saving of over 14 million units a year, the discom said.
