Staff Correspondent

`Lokayukta must have powers to take legal action against corrupt officials'

  • Youth urged not to vote for corrupt candidates
  • Former Lokayukta denounces caste-based politics

HASSAN: Whether in power or not, former Lokayukta Venkatachala continues his tirade against corruption. The onslaught was such that at on one occasion an MLA who was presiding over the function staged a walkout from the meeting.

At a function in Arsikere, he called on the youth to fight against corruption and not to vote for corrupt people. He went a step further at a function in Sakleshpur where he criticised a Chief Minister and a former Prime Minister and advised people to use the Right to Information Act to send corrupt officials to jail.

Bhrastachara Nirmoolana Vedike and other organisations held a programme on elimination of corruption in Sakleshpur on Monday. Inaugurating the programme, Mr. Venkatachala said the Lokayukta must have sanction from the Government to take legal action against corrupt officials. Mr. Venkatachala criticised the Janata Dal (Secular) for its caste-based politics. He accused the party of cashing in on the vote bank of Vokkaligas in Hassan, Mysore and Mandya districts. "I had high hopes from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy but I am now disillusioned, as he did not keep up his promise given to people," he added. He said caste based election was a form of corruption.

    Basic amenities

Freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy regretted that after freedom, organisations had mushroomed throughout the country but people still did not have basic amenities. Sakleshpur MLA, H.M. Viswanath, said in the 1980s he also fought against corruption and injustice but was labelled a "rowdy element".

Viswanath, MLA, walked out protesting against the attack on Janata Dal (S) leaders by Venkatachala. Bhrastachara Nirmoolana Vedike president Ravi Kumar spoke.
