MYSORE: Over 100 residents of Gandhinagar in Mysore, who have been denied their regular quota of kerosene for the last several weeks on account of the confusion in distribution of ration cards, staged a demonstration at FTS Circle in the city on Tuesday.

Holding empty cans of kerosene, the protesters belonging to poor families, shouted slogans against the officials of Food and Civil Supplies Department for the delay in completion of the fresh survey ordered by the Government to set right the loopholes in distribution of ration cards. "Hundreds of poor families in the area have been issued Above Poverty Line (APL) cards, which does not entitle them to their monthly quota of kerosene. Neither do they have cooking gas connections at home nor the monthly quota of kerosene," convenor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Gandhinagar Residents' Welfare Committee Sharath S. told The Hindu .

New survey delayed

Even though the Government ordered a fresh survey to identify families below poverty line, the exercise was being unduly delayed.

"The authorities are refusing to even consider the old ration cards for providing kerosene to these poor families till the fresh survey is completed," Mr. Sharath pointed out.

Mysore Lok Sabha MP C.H. Vijayshankar and a team of officials from the Department of Food and Civil Supplies visited the spot.

The protest was withdrawn after the team from Food and Civil Supplies Department comprising Deputy Director Mahadevappa and Assistant Director Venkatachaliah, besides Food Inspector Prabhuswamy promised to set right the residents' problems in two days.
