GO on filling vacancies stayed

MADURAI : The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed a Government Order permitting Collectors to fill 559 vacancies of overseer, junior draughting officer and road inspector grade-II in the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department through the employment exchange.

Justice K. Suguna granted the interim stay with respect to Tuticorin district and ordered notice to the Government returnable by two weeks. The writ petitioner, V. Paneerselvam, a temporary employee, said 1,118 vacancies were identified and the Government passed a GO on October 19, 2006, to fill 50 per cent of them. As the temporary staff members were expecting to occupy the rest of the vacancies, their chances of regularisation ceased with the GO, he said.
