Some other land to be used for dumping garbage

Staff Reporter

As an echo of High Court's directive

  • Nod for hiring earthmoving equipment
  • Sanctioning of funds for "urgent" works questioned

TAMBARAM: With the Madras High Court directing the Pallavaram Municipality to stop dumping garbage on Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam radial road adjacent to the Periya Eri, the local body has decided to use a portion of land adjacent to a burial ground in Ganapathypuram for the purpose. This was decided at a meeting of the Council on Friday. Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi said that following the court order, the local body faced problems to dispose of 75 tonnes of garbage generated every day.

And till the time the modern, integrated compost yard near Vandalur was ready for use, garbage would be dumped on the land adjacent to the burial ground. Councillors gave their consent to sanction Rs. 2 lakh for hiring earthmoving equipment and to create access roads to reach the spot. The meeting witnessed heated exchanges between AIADMK and DMK members. The former Municipal Chairman, P. Dhan Singh, objected to DMK members replying to his questions. As soon as the meeting began, M. Chandrakesavan (Ward No. 13) tore the agenda copy and left the meeting hall, objecting to the practice of seeking their nod after works were completed.

He said there were no provisions in the Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act, 1920, that entitled the Chairman to allot funds for works that were classified as "urgent." Vice-Chairman G. Karuna said it was well within the powers of the Chairman to sanction works considering their urgency and importance and it was not necessary to wait for the council meeting.

    S. Narasimhan (Communist Party of India - Marxist) sought a thorough scrutiny into reported attempts to fill up an abandoned quarry at Hasthinapuram. He said public property should not be allowed to be taken over by private individuals.

Rejina Ilangovan of Ward No. 1 and Suganthy Shankar of Ward No. 8 complained that garbage collection was not properly monitored by officials.

Vijayalakshmi Santhanam of Ward No. 36 appealed to Mr. Karunanidhi to look into the problem of shrinking road space on Rajendra Prasad Road.
