No better focus on road safety campaign

ROAD TROUBLE IN NORTH CHENNAI: The car which crashed into an uncovered ditch at Kolathur on Tuesday morning.
CHENNAI
: A Ford Ikon car crashed into a deep ditch dug by a civic agency at Kolathur on the northern end of Chennai on Tuesday morning, injuring its travellers and a woman driving the vehicle.
Though the injuries to the travellers were minimal, the issue brought to focus the need to include civic agencies as well as other Government wings in the ongoing campaign marking the road safety week.
According to eye-witnesses, the woman driver, who was negotiating a turn from the Red Hills Road into the Kumaran Nagar Main Road, lost control as she tried to avoid an autorickshaw. As a result,
the car fell straight into the ditch dug for a stormwater drain canal from Kolathur to Madhavaram.
As the travellers cried for help, they were pulled out by passers-by.
Residents say the road has been in a precarious state for the last one month as the work has been going on at a snail's pace.
The one-km-long unprotected and unsafe ditch poses a threat to the road-users.
A resident of Kolathur, Mr. Rajendran sent the photograph to The Hindu , highlighting the civic problem.
The growth of residential colonies and congestion on roads in the area owing to the ongoing bridge work at Padi have seen an increase in traffic in Kolathur and nearby areas.
