ILL-FATED VEHICLE: The maxi cab that was involved in the accident at Kenchatanahalli on Tuesday.
HASSAN: Forty-one people were injured when the maxi cab in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a ditch at Kenchatanahalli near Hema Gangothri postgraduate Centre, five km from Hassan, , on Tuesday. The driver of the maxi cab, which was going from Channarayapatna to Hassan along NH 48, was trying to overtake a KSRTC bus when the accident occurred.
Admitted to hospital
The police rushed all the passengers to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital. Saumya, a 16-year-old student, has not gained consciousness. She was travelling to Hassan to appear for a tailoring course interview at the government polytechnic. She had boarded the taxi at Dandiganahalli. Doctors at the hospital told The Hindu that most of the passengers had fractured their legs and the condition of four is serious. Hassan City DSP Rudrappa said that taxis should not carry more than 11 passengers according to the conditions laid down in the permit. Search is on for the driver who had run away after the accident. "We are verifying the records of the vehicle. All the injured are recovering except Saumya who is kept under observation in hospital," he said.
