NEW DELHI: Nobel laureate Tony Leggett, who had won the prize for Physics in 2003, has written to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam seeking his intervention to preserve the Vasant Kunj Mahipalpur Ridge and forest area. In a letter to the President, Mr. Legett has stated that he had personally visited the area some years ago along with his colleague Vikram Soni, who for the past 12 years has been working on protecting this green from encroachment. Noting that a resource like the Ridge makes a huge difference to the "quality of life of the citizens", he said there are very few cities the size of Delhi which are fortunate enough to have a similar "wilderness area". But now, he said, "although the area is protected in all the Master Plans of Delhi and building on it is forbidden, construction of commercial and residential complexes has recently begun thereon". With the Ministry of Environment taking the view that because initial stages of the construction have taken place and money has been invested, and it should be allowed, Mr. Legett has urged Dr. Kalam to intervene in "preserving this invaluable heritage in its pristine form".
