Several South Delhi viewers dissatisfied with CAS

Complaints of inferior quality of pay channels, poor service abound

NEW DELHI: Three days after the much talked-about Conditional Access System (CAS) was introduced in South Delhi, viewers in several homes appeared to be dissatisfied with the quality of the channels and functioning of set-top boxes.

If there were some viewers who complained about the inferior quality of the pay channels despite getting a brand new STB, there were others who had to face a lot of harassment even after having made advance payment for the device.

"We got Tata Sky service installed for our two television sets on December 25. We made advance payment to the company's executives despite the fact that CAS was to be rolled out a week later," said Nisha Singh of Press Enclave in Saket.

"They dumped the device at our place the same day, promising to come and fix it on December 30. But that never happened. We tried reaching Tata Sky executives, but every time they gave us false assurances. Worse still, their call centres do not have a toll-free number and since they are based in Chandigarh and Hyderabad, we had to make STD calls to speak to their executives."

Despite having made all necessary arrangements to ensure that no channel disappeared from her TV screen, it was only on Tuesday that the engineers finally arrived at Mrs. Singh's residence.

"It was only when my son threatened to throw out their device and switch to some other company that they came to our place. We were forced to watch only the free-to-air channels all this while," she added.

`Grainy' quality

Elsewhere in the city, it was the "grainy" quality of the channels that left viewers fuming.

"I got a new STB from my cable operator but the service is so inferior. The images and the sound quality are not clear. After every 10 minutes, the screen goes blank as our TV set is unable to catch the signal," said Mini Kapoor, a resident of Mahipalpur.

Her neighbour, Ajit Sharma, complained that he was still viewing select channels because he was not receiving all the pay channels as promised by his cable operator.

"When he installed the STB at home, the cable operator said we would be able to watch as many as 155 channels. He said there were problems in the wiring system and promised to come after a day to set it right. But to no avail," he lamented.
