Kozhikode: The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has chalked out plans of agitation against the decision of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government to take loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) with "several anti-people" conditions. BJYM State president K. Surendran said here on Wednesday that Morcha activists would take out marches and picket the five municipal corporations of the State on January 22. They would also hold anti-ADB conventions in all districts in February.
Stir against strings
He said that the agitation was not against the international funding agency but against the strings attached to the loan. The funding, to be obtained under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme for the municipal corporations, contained provisions such as levying water tax, metering public taps, appointing consultants of the ADB and allowing them to interfere in the functioning of the civic bodies. The content of the document signed by the present Government was similar to the one signed by the previous United Democratic Front Government. Mr. Surendran accused Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan of behaving like an Opposition Leader. His statements that he had not seen a document signed by his Cabinet colleagues on the ADB loan revealed the state of affairs of the LDF Government. If Mr. Achuthanandan was kept in the dark about the document he should remove his colleagues involved in it from the Cabinet. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) was making the ADB loan a tool for the bickering in the party. He said the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) had taken the role of Shikhandi of the Mahabharata when it came to ADB loan issue. Earlier it vehemently opposed the State Government taking the loan but now it retracted its stand and was supporting the "anti-people measures." The DYFI should be prepared to review its programmes.
