This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru, commending the Congress election manifesto to the Subjects Committee meeting in Lakshmibai Nagar (Indore) on January 3, urged partymen to carry its message to far-flung corners of the country. In his 60-minute speech, he asked them to bear in mind three basic points, namely, socialistic approach, democratic methods and peaceful and legitimate means, for the progress of "this caravan of crores" that has been going on for thousands of years. Expressing his feeling of bliss that they were alive at this moment, in the history of India, and took part in the pilgrimage of freedom, Mr. Nehru said that all felt the glow at the building up of new India. Explaining the part of the Congress in this task, he compared it to the river that goes on flowing and goes on broadening as it flows ultimately into the ocean of multilateral freedom. "After completing the pilgrimage of freedom, we are taking part in the bigger battle, more brilliant battle, namely battle against poverty and the whole world is looking at us. The great work that is going on in India is not copied from outside, but has grown in the soil. The work that is before us, enriched by contributions and traditions of Dadabhai Naoroji, Tilak and Gandhi, should be done with full vigour. How big is the burden, so big is the fruit thereof."
