Craft matters

`Do not touch' — reads a warning put up in front of a row of ceramic works on display at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Kozhikode. Nevertheless, one is tempted to skim one's fingers over the ceramic works so beautifully crafted by P. Ushadevi, Principal of Meenchanda Vocational HSS.

The ceramic works pasted on to the pottery are made by mixing ceramic powder, corn flour and Fevicol, explains Ushadevi. Plaster of Paris moulds are sometimes used to fashion the desired shapes. At times, she uses cement putty to give the ceramic works a smooth finish. The ceramic painting or fabric painting is done on the product to embellish it.

Nearly 60 ceramic works are on display at the exhibition. The artist has also put on display two oil paintings, one of which features Lord Ganesha. Motifs of flowers, birds and nests dominate Ushadevi's works. She explains the detail about each work to the curious visitors. God and Goddesses from Indian mythologies figure in her artworks. A bunch of violet grapes are one of her most visually appealing works on show. The craft exhibition will be on till Thursday.
