Zilla panchayat member assaulted

Staff Correspondent

Bidar: A gang of six persons assaulted Ramesh Deokatte, a member of the Bidar Zilla Panchayat, in front of his house in Aurad on Tuesday.

Mr. Deokatte has been admitted to the District Hospital. "He has suffered injuries in the head and legs. He has been placed under observation for 24 hours," District Surgeon Chandrakanth Gudage told presspersons on Thursday.

BJP leader and zilla panchayat member Rajshekar Murthy said that the gang gathered in front of Mr. Deokatte's house at midnight on that day. "Purporting to be villagers from Mr. Deokatte's constituency, the attackers called him out of the house. He came out of the house unsuspectingly when they attacked him with iron rods. His mother, Saraswati, who heard him shout for help, rushed out and tried to protect him. When she too started shouting for help, they fled," Mr. Murthy said. "It was too dark for me to recognise them," added Mr. Deokatte who was gaining consciousness.

Senior BJP leader Basavaraj Patil Kollur suspected political rivalry to be reason for the attack. He alleged that police had become "ineffective and forgetful of their duties" in Aurad taluk.

Ms. Saraswati has registered a complaint with the Aurad police station. In her complaint, Ms. Saraswati has said that the gang members spoke Marathi.
