Bidar: MLA Merajuddin Patel has welcomed Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's statement on waiving farm loans. This will help contain farmers' suicides. Such a step will also protect the interests of the party. The first loan waiver announced during Ramakrishna Hegde's period had established that the party was for the farmers. Farmers extended support to the party due to this. This support base will be further strengthened by the latest statement of the Chief Minister. He said farmers are suffering from the growing burden of debts. The interest on debts is growing. They are in a strange situation as they are not eligible for fresh loans as they had to pay the old loans. "No other State Government is offering farm loans at the rate of 4 per cent interest. We are thankful to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for making this a budget proposal," he said. However, all the farmers are not getting the benefit of these low interest loans. The waiver of farm loans, therefore, is the only way to protect their interests. There is a possibility that the waiver may increase the financial burden on the Government. This could be made good by generating revenues from other sources. Waiver of all farm loans will send a strong signal that the Government is committed to the welfare of farmers, Mr. Patel said in a release.
