The Seethakkaathi Thamizh Paeravai of Sadakkathullah Appa College, Palayamkottai, recently organised a function to release a poetry book, `India Shines,' penned by Thaazhai. M. Shaik Dasan. The Correspondent, SAC, T.E.S. Fathu Rabbani, released the book and the Chairman of Kayalpattinam town panchayat and chairman of Wavoo Wajuha College for Women, S. Syed Abdul Rahman, received the first copy. The Principal, SAC, H. Syed Othuman, and V.S.T. Amanullah, an engineer, offered felicitations. Students of SAC also organised a meeting to remember tsunami victims.
A national-level seminar on `Eco-informatics,' jointly organised by the Department of Applied Zoology and Biotechnology of Govindammal Aditanar College for Women, Tiruchendur, and the Cell for Freshwater Ecology, a non-governmental organisation, was held at Tiruchendur recently. Researchers from various institutions situated in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu presented scientific papers on `Ecoinformatics'.
The fourth International Congress on English Grammar organised by the P.S.N.A. College of Engineering and Technology, in association with the Systemic Functional Linguistic Association and the Forum for English Language Teachers, will be held on the college premises in Dindigul between January 8 and 12, according to college director R.S.K. Raguraman. The congress will focus on technical, business and remedial English, computer aided language laboratory, communicative skills development strategies, English for academic purpose and as link language and Lexico grammar language through literature language acquisition and learning. Besides, the Central Institute of English and Foreign Language (CIEFL) will also conduct a workshop on translation. Professors from international universities in Australia and Canada and eminent scholars from China, Kuwait and Iran are expected to participate. Professors and researchers from CIEFL, Madurai Kamaraj University and Bharathidasan University will take part. Upgrading skills is essential to thrive in highly competitive market. Handlooms weavers are not an exception to it. To enhance their skills and get a handsome earning, Gandhigram Rural University organised a skill upgradation training programme in textile designing, dyeing and printing for handloom weavers on the university premises recently. In his special address, the Assistant Director of the Department of Handlooms, R. Murugesan, said that Erode circle was the first in the State in handlooms production and was exporting goods worth Rs.200 crore annually. Export based matt weaving had enhanced the income of 40,000 weaving families in the circle. Such a training would help handloom weavers upgrade their skills as that would ultimately improve the quality of products and face the competitive marketing environment. Taking, perhaps, a well-deserved break from their usual routine, students of Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi, enjoyed their day out on the occasion of `Blossom - 06', which was conducted on December 16. About 100 students from seven colleges in Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, and Tirunelveli districts took part in the cultural fest. Competitions such as elocution, vegetable carving and flower arrangement provided some enjoyable moments.
A campus interview was conducted on Friday at Pandian Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Arasanur, in Sivaganga district.
Data Capture Systems, Chennai, Techland Informatics, Tiruchi, Tech Camp, Mysore, were the companies that participated in the recruitment drive. About 100 engineering students from 10 colleges in the southern districts attended the placement programme.
