Leaders at loggerheads on `Rayalaseema State'

Special Correspondent

Some propose redesignating Kurnool as capital; others opt for Tirupati

KURNOOL: Difference of opinion cropped up among Congress leaders over the capital of `Rayalaseema State'. MLAs Gangula Pratap Reddy and Erasu Pratap Reddy proposed Tirupati as the State capital in the event of new Sate being formed.

Kurnool Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy sharply reacted to the proposal saying that Kurnool should be capital in case Telangana was separated and Andhra State was reverted back to 1953 status.

Mr. Reddy said even people of Andhra should accept Kurnool as the capital as earlier, after a series of negotiations for over a decade, Kurnool was made the capital. On the other hand, Mr. Gangula Pratap Reddy and Erasu Pratap Reddy said they proposed Tirupati considering the possibility of Nellore and Prakasam districts joining the Greater Rayalaseema. Saying that they were well aware of the stakes of Kurnool city, still Tirupati would suit the aspirations of people of the 21st century.
