Staff Reporter
KANNUR: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has called upon the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government for active and comprehensive intervention in job sectors to increase employment opportunities in the State. Briefing the proceedings on the first day of the delegates' session at the State conference of the DYFI in Kannur on Wednesday, DYFI State president P. Shivaramakrishnan and State secretary A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, said a resolution adopted at the conference called for the Government's initiatives to start more industrial units with special focus on value-addition and to modernise the traditional sector to explore their job potential. They said the DYFI was in favour of private investments coming to the State. They said the DYFI had evaluated the functioning of the LDF Government over the last seven months and found that it was fundamentally different from the previous United Democratic Front Government, which had implemented neo-liberal policies harmful to the people of the State. Stating that the LDF had come to power as a result of strong opposition to the policies of the UDF Government, they said the LDF Government had reversed the policies of the previous Government by lifting recruitment ban, abandoning the downsizing of the civil service as part of the Modernising Governance Programme and introducing environment protection policies.
Asked if the DYFI's political and organisation report being discussed at the conference mentioned its struggles against the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan, Mr. Pradeepkumar said the DYFI's struggles were not against the ADB per se, but against the policies such as the MGP that involved downsizing of the civil service and proposals such as introduction of user fee for public water taps. The report mentioned the struggles against the policies such as the MGP, he said.
Provisions different
"We understand that the provisions in the ADB loan agreement are different from the earlier perspective," he said adding that the DYFI had trust in the Government that no harmful conditions would be included in the agreement.
