Mahe: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that the administration would earmark Rs 10 lakh next year for distribution of scholarship to Muslim students proficient in public examinations.

Distributing cash award to students under a scheme of Puducherry Wakf Board at the Civil Station auditorium in Mahe on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said Mahe would be promoted into a tourist hub sooner.

He also handed over "Malayala Ratna" literary awards to A. Gangadharan and O. Kunhiraman Nair and "Puduvai Kalaimamani" awards to P.K. Sivakumar and K.K. Haridoss in recognition of their skills in music and literature. The award is instituted by the Department of Art and Culture.

Infrastructure

He said that a number of organisations had come forward to develop infrastructure in the Union Territory.

With a view to enabling the youth in Mahe get jobs, an Information Technology park would be set up at the site available in the precincts of the Government Arts College here.

The auditorium (the venue of the function) would be air-conditioned soon.

He said that the Government was mulling creation of "Kalai Maamani" awards to children.

Mr. Rangasamy said that the Government would provide an enhanced assistance of Rs.1,000 instead of Rs. 600 now provided to proficient students in public examinations. Those emerging with excellent marks in ITI courses would be presented Rs.1,500 instead of Rs.1,200 given now.

Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who is in charge of Wakf, presided. Health Minister E. Valsaraj, Deputy Speaker A.V. Sreedharan and the Mahe municipal chairman Ramesh Parambath also spoke.

The Regional Administrator of Mahe, M.V.V. Satyanarayana, welcomed.

Wakf Board schemes

Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Wakf Board A. Sherfudeen referred to various schemes implemented by the Board. The Chief Minister handed a cheque for Rs. 18,000 to management committee of a mosque of Chalakkara near Mahe. G. Palani, Chief Educational Officer, Mahe, proposed a vote of thanks.

A cultural programme was held at the end.
