Hand-dyeing unit to be opened on Friday

Government has invested Rs.353.07 lakh in the project

KOZHIKODE: Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim will on Friday commission a hand-dyeing unit set up at the textile project implemented by Wayanad Handloom, Powerloom and Multi-purpose Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd. at Trissileri, Mananthavadi, in Wayanad district.

K.C. Kunhiraman, MLA, and C.M. Sarasamma, Wayanad district panchayat president, will attend.

Texfed project

The hand-dyeing unit, a project of Kerala State Co-operative Textile Federation Ltd. (Texfed), was built on 13.4 acres of land in 1999 with the aim of rehabilitating Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Communities and unwed mothers.

It also aimed at empowering the socially and economically weaker sections of society by providing jobs and giving shelter.

First phase

Texfed commissioned the first phase of the project on September 9, 2000 and the present facility was commissioned on March 3, 2001.

The society now has 367 members, 85 per cent of them being members of Scheduled Tribes. The Government has invested Rs.353.07 lakh in the project.

The unit manufactures grey fabrics, yarn-dyed checked shirtings, lungies, bedspreads on powerlooms and bedspreads, table mats, curtain cloth, towels and other home furnishings on handlooms. It has also executed export orders.

The hand-dyeing unit, set up at the project site with financial aid from the district panchayat, would help save money and time in yarn dyeing.

This is expected to boost the production of yarn-dyed cloth, a value-added product.
