Move to sell NMDC land

Special Correspondent

Administrator's hand alleged

KOZHIKODE: Protests have been voiced against the reported move to sell the land owned by North Malabar District Co-operative Supply and Marketing Ltd. (NMDC).

The society, which has interests in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad and Kozhikode districts, has been under the rule of an administrator for three years after an elected Board that was managing it was dismissed.

The NMDC Members Forum, consisting of members of the society, alleged that there was a move to sell the land. Former directors of the society are also members of this forum. It alleged that even though a general body meeting of the society had decided on October 23 last year to sell only 25 cents to clear debts, moves were afoot to sell the entire land owned by the society for a "paltry amount."

It is also alleged that transactions involving nearly three acres of land in Kalpetta town took place during the rule of the administrator.

A meeting held under the banner of NMDC Members Forum recently also alleged that the value of membership was being sought to be raised from Rs.100 to Rs.1,000 "without proper approval of the general body".

The protest and demand for an enquiry into the recent decisions of the society taken by the administrator was made at a meeting of the NMDC Members Forum presided over by K. Surendran, president, State Yuva Morcha and a former director of the society. The former president of the society M Rajan and a former director P Moosa also attended the meeting.

The meeting also elected K. Surendran president of the NMDC Members Forum, M. Rajan, general secretary, P. Moosa and U.K. Prasad Kumar, vice-presidents, J.N. Girish and M.T. Francis, secretaries and Chulliyil Narayanan as treasurer to "undertaken a campaign to protect the interests of the society."
