Upgrading skills is essential to thrive in highly competitive market. Handlooms weavers are not an exception to it. To enhance their skills and get a handsome earning, Gandhigram Rural University organised a skill upgradation training programme in textile designing, dyeing and printing for handloom weavers on the university premises recently. In his special address, the Assistant Director of the Department of Handlooms, R. Murugesan, said that Erode circle was the first in the State in handlooms production and was exporting goods worth Rs.200 crore annually. Export based matt weaving had enhanced the income of 40,000 weaving families in the circle. Such a training would help handloom weavers upgrade their skills as that would ultimately improve the quality of products and face the competitive marketing environment.
