News Analysis
* A sentence in "9/11: protest over missing persons in Pakistan" ("International" page, December 30, 2006) was: "A representative of the Islamic Defence of Human Rights, which helped to organise the families, told journalists that the missing men were picked up by 's intelligence agencies simply because `they were religious minded, prayed regularly and had beards'." It should have been: "A representative of the Islamic Defence ... were picked up by Pakistan's intelligence agencies simply because `they were religious minded, prayed regularly and had beards'." * With reference to a Guardian report "U.K. pays off Second World War loans" (Op-Ed, December 30, 2006), a query was whether VJ (Victory over Japan) Day was when the Normandy assault began or when the war formally ended. The Allies had delivered Japan an ultimatum to surrender on July 28, 1945. When this was ignored, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9, the day Soviet forces invaded Manchuria. The Allies celebrated victory over Japan on August 15, 1945, although the Japanese administration under General Koiso Kuniaki did not officially surrender with a signed document until September 2. Both dates (August 15 and September 2) are known as VJ Day. Since Japan was the last Axis Power to surrender and VJ Day followed VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) by three months, VJ Day marked the end of World War II. VE Day or May 8, 1945, is the day on which the Allies announced the surrender of German forces in Europe. VJ Day is now sometimes referred to as VP Day (Victory in the Pacific Day) to bring it in line with VE Day where the major enemy power, Germany, was not singled out in the way VJ Day did to Japan.
* In "Serene heights" (The Hindu-Magazine, December 24, 2006, page 7), it was stated that Sarala Ben was Gandhiji's disciple. Was it Sarala Ben or Meera Ben, was a query. Mahatma Gandhi spent some time at Kasauni (in present day Uttaranchal), while writing the book Anashakti Yoga. The Anashakti Ashram was founded there by his disciple Sarala Ben (Katherine Mary Heilman). Meera Ben (Madeleine Slade) was also Gandhiji's disciple.
* Correction in correction: With reference to the correction relating to Margadarsi Financiers (January 2, 2007), the Hyderabad Legal Correspondent clarifies that the report as published was correct. It is not the contention of Ramoji Rao, the petitioner, that the appointment of a committee is not permissible under the A.P. Protection of Depositers of Financial Establishments Act. He is saying that the action of the Government has foundations in the Act and apprehends that based on the committee's findings, the provision of the Act will be enforced against him. Hence he wants the Act struck down. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
