CB CID team to visit Kerala

K.T. Sangameswaran

To probe charges in cheating case

  • Building contractor is alleged to have collected Rs. 12 crore.
  • The police have received 300 petitions against the contractor

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu CB CID, which is probing cases of alleged cheating of building contractors by Yobu Saravanan of Vellore, is planning to visit Kerala.

Investigation revealed that Saravanan had given more than Rs.1 crore to three persons, two of whom are from the city and one said to be in Singapore, according to a CB CID officer.

Saravanan, under the pretext of building houses for the poor free of cost from funds collected from abroad, allegedly entered into an agreement with contractors and collected Rs.2,000 per house as deposit. Going by the cases registered and petitions received, it amounted to Rs.12 crore.

The police special unit has so far received about 300 petitions against Saravanan of which nearly 150 are from Kerala.

As part of the investigation and to avoid inconvenience to complainants in Kerala, a CB CID team will visit the State. Nine cars and Rs.13.5 lakh have been recovered so far.

    K. Bhavaneeswari, Superintendent of Police CB CID, said in a similar cheating case in which Anantharaj (45) of Othiathur in Villupuram district had been arrested, the police had identified Rs.1.5 crore worth of land and houses at seven places, which had been purchased from the money collected.

    Twelve cases

Twelve cases had been registered and 250 petitions received. Anantharaj allegedly collected Rs.10 crore.

Three vehicles had been seized. Efforts were on to recover four more vehicles and other property.

Steps were on to sell the recovered property, through the court, to repay the victims.
