Website showcasing World Kannada Meet to be launched

Staff Correspondent

It will give information about the programmes to be held

  • Rallies will be taken out in all the 175 taluks in the State
  • Emphasis will be given to agro-based activities

BELGAUM: The district administration has decided to launch an official website for the forthcoming "World Kannada Meet-2007" to be held in the city from February 23 to 25.

The website would provide information about the programmes for the three-day meet.

According to official sources here on Wednesday, various committees have been constituted for procession, hospitality (food and accommodation), publicity, cultural programmes, transportation and so on.

    Awareness

Preparations are also being made to create statewide awareness with rallies such "Samskrutik Dibbana" on a large-scale. The rallies would be taken out in all the 175 taluks in the State with local artistes and cultural troupes converging at Belgaum for the grand finale.

Sources told The Hindu that steps were being taken to organise the meet on a grand-scale to draw national attention. Eminent Kannadigas from the State, country and abroad would be invited to participate in various events.

Large-scale exhibitions of books, industrial and handicraft products, seminars and discussions on socio-economic and cultural progress and an investors' meet will be part of the meet. Emphasis will be given to agro-based activities in view of highly congenial weather and climatic conditions supporting horticulture crops.

    Rare opportunity

The idea is to tap the rare opportunity coming in the form of a meet to showcase the industrial and agro-economic potential of Belgaum and inspire prospective investors.

The three-day event should not end up as a mere cultural extravaganza but lay a strong foundation for the economical progress of the city and district. If that happens, the efforts in that direction would be meaningful to the people of Belgaum district, said sources.

A museum is also being planned which would house galleries for different art forms such as painting, handicrafts and so on.

Meanwhile, the district administration has planned to organise a flower show, sources added.
