Sensex crosses 14000-mark


MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange key index Sensex on Wednesday closed above the 14000-mark for the first time following a sharp rally in automobile and technology stocks on heavy buying by funds.

Continuing its robust growth for the second straight day in the New Year, the 30-share sensitive index opened firm at 13969.45 and hit a new intra-day high of 14035.67. It later closed at a new high of 14014.92, showing a smart gain of 72.68 points over Tuesday's close of 13942.24. The index had gained 155 points on Tuesday.

The previous intra-day high for the Sensex was 14035.30 recorded on December 6 and the closing high was 13972.03 on December 7, 2006. Similarly, on the wide-based National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty closed at a new high of 4024.05, gaining 16.65 points over 4007.40.

The major gainers were Bajaj Auto, Maruti Udyog, Tata Motors, TCS, Infosys Technologies, Wipro, Satyam Computer, L&T, State Bank, Ranbaxy, Cipla, Bharti Airtel, RIL, BHEL and RCOM.— PTI
