Bhan to hold additional charge of CSIR

CHIDAMBARAM: Biotechnology Department Secretary M.K. Bhan is to take additional charge as Director- General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Stop-gap arrangement

Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said Dr. Bhan it was a stop-gap arrangement as it would take some time to constitute a committee to select a suitable candidate for the post.

The Ministry and CSIR are a fix as the Director of the Council's Mysore-based Central Food Technological Research Institute, V.Prakash, selected to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of R.A. Mashelkar, expressed his inability to join on medical grounds.

Serious ailment

Significantly, in a new experiment in administration, Dr. Prakash was working under Dr. Mashelkar as an understudy for a month to ensure a smooth transition. But, unfortunately, a few days before he was to takeover, he was diagnosed with a serious ailment.

Dr. Mashelkar retired on December 31.
