NEW DELHI: Terming the abduction, rape and killings of children of Nithari in Noida a "national tragedy," the Congress on Wednesday asked the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government to refer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Asserting that it was hesitant to "politicise" the ghastly crime, the party said it was a matter of shame that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was still expressing confidence in the police. "We don't share confidence in police that justice will be done and call upon him [Chief Minister] to refer the case to the CBI, and take steps to ensure that the children who were killed and their families get justice, the guilty are punished as speedily and efficiently as possible," party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said at a party briefing. She said the crime had shaken the conscience of the nation. "It is also a blot on any civilised society," she said. Ms. Natarajan said what was a matter of greater shame was that children went missing for over two years and claimed that the total number of disappearances was over 98 as against 38 cases that were reported.
