Sabarimala: security strengthened

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: There is heavy rush of devotees visiting the Sabarimala shrine since Tuesday afternoon.

The police have strengthened security arrangements at the Sannidhanam in view of the rush, said Police Special Officer C. Rajagopal.

Talking to reporters at the Sabarimala Sannidhanam on Wednesday, Mr Rajagopal said a public announcement system would be set up at Marakkoottom soon.

He said the police would also constitute a separate disaster management unit at the Sannidhanam in consultation with officials attached to various departments and the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Metal detector

Mr Rajagopal said a door-framed metal detector would be installed on the Paandithavalom route soon following the heavy inflow of pilgrims on the route to Sannidhanam.

He said the police had already informed the TDB on the need to strengthen the barricades along the Chandranandan Road.

Pirated CDs seized

Meanwhile, in a surprise raid conducted at eight shops in Pampa and Sannidhanam in the past 24 hours, a police party headed by Pathanamthitta DySP, C.G. Sureshkumar seized 4,415 pirated CDs of Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil movies.

The police have registered cases against eight licencees, invoking the provisions of the Copy Right Act.

Eight persons were arrested in connection with the seizure of pirated CDs, Mr. Sureshkumar said.

All the accused were remanded to judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate's Court.

Kakkad Circcle Inspector Abdul Rashi and sub-inspectors Vidyadharan and Ayub Khan were the other members of the raid party. The raid was conducted on the direction of the District Superintendent of Police M.N. Jayaprakash.
