HYDERABAD: Vijayawada-based doctor Vallabhaneni Ramprasad was unanimously elected Chairman of State Medical Council here on Wednesday.

He was among various office-bearers unanimously elected at the induction function of the members. Others included, G. Balamaddaiah, Vice-Chairman (Kurnool) and P. Vijaychander Reddy (Warangal), L. Sampath Kumar (Kakinada) and K. Subrahmaniam (Tirupati).

The ethics and finance committees of the council were also elected on the occasion with K. Ramesh Reddy and Balbir Singh Yadav as chairmen respectively. Both of them are from Hyderabad.

Presiding over the induction ceremony for 16 members of the council, outgoing Chairman Chigurupati Nageswara Rao said the constitution of the new body was significant as it was being done after a gap of nine years.

Code of conduct

Dr. Rao, a six-time Chairman of the council since 1994, retired on Wednesday. He said the council was engaged in registering and issuing licences to practising doctors. It supervised implementation of code of conduct by members. It was mandatory for every practising doctor to display his registration certificate in the consultation room.

Court orders

The elections to the body were conducted on court orders between May and August last. About 50,000 doctors elected seven members to the council and the State Government and NTR University of Health Sciences nominated nine others. The Directors of Health, Medical Education and Institute of Preventive Medicine were among the nominees.
