Row over disability certificate in MLA's name

Private TV channel telecasts sting operation

  • People with disabilities demand action against the doctor concerned
  • The certificate mentions MLA has 60 per cent disability

GULBARGA: The telecast of sting operation by a private Kannada television channel in which a disability certificate was issued in the name of city MLA Chandrashekhar Patil Revoor has stirred up a controversy with government doctors questioning the genuineness of the certificate.

A private Kannada television channel has been telecasting the sting operation, in which the reporter of the channel was seen obtaining the certificate in the name of Mr. Revoor by paying some money to touts allegedly operating on the government hospital premises.

The news about the certificate allegedly given at the government hospital kicked off an immediate protest by people with disabilities and the Student Federation of India, demanding action against the doctor concerned. They alleged that issuing disability certificates was a big racket in the government hospital. They wanted the government to subject all the persons, who were issued the certificates, to another medical check up by a specially appointed team of doctors to verify the genuineness of the certificates.

They alleged that persons with disabilities were made to run from pillar to post to get the certificate while the able bodied persons who can afford to pay bribe were given the certificates without any hassles. The private channel claimed that the certificate mentions that the city MLA was suffering from 60 per cent physical disability.

Mr. Revoor immediately summoned the District Surgeon and the concerned doctor, in whose name the certificate was issued, to know the details about the incident. Both the District Surgeon and the doctor denied issuing any certificate in the name of Mr. Revoor. They reportedly told the MLA that the signatures in the certificate were forged.

When contacted, District Surgeon Susheela said that the Government General Hospital had not issued any certificate in the name of Mr. Revoor and the certificate was apparently a forged one. The certificate, besides having the seal of the Government of Karnataka, had the seal of the District Surgeon and the signatures of the District Surgeon and the doctor concerned.
