Bhatnagar takes over from Perti

BANGALORE: Girish Bhatnagar, General Manager, Rail Wheel Factory, Bangalore, has taken over as General Manager, South Western Railway (SWR) on Wednesday.

T.N. Perti, who was hitherto the General Manager, SWR, retired on December 31. Mr. Bhatnagar would hold the post of General Manager, SWR, in addition to that of General Manager, RWF, said an official release.

Farm loans: `issue notification'

BANGALORE: Former Cooperation Minister and Congress leader H. Vishwanath on Wednesday urged Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to back his promise of waiving farmers' loans availed from cooperative institutions with an official notification.

He told presspersons in Bangalore that mere lip service would not help and concrete action was needed.

Mr. Vishwanath cautioned the Chief Minister that any delay in waiver of their loans would increase the number of suicides by farmers. — Special Correspondent

Cultural festival

BANGALORE: A three-day cultural festival of the oppressed communities will be organised by the Kaginele Mahasamsthana Kanaka Gurupeetha on the banks of the Krishna at Thinthani in Raichur district from January 11.

Announcing this at a press conference in Bangalore, Mahasamsthana's Gulbarga division head Siddaramanandapuri Mahaswami said the festival would also include a folk sports event.

The festival comprises a meeting of elected representatives of oppressed sections which would be inaugurated by Congress leader Siddaramaiah and a convention of religious heads of the oppressed communities. — Special Correspondent

No power supply tomorrow

HASSAN: There will be no power supply in Belur town, Mudigere and Belur taluks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday to facilitate emergency repairs in the 11 kV sub-station, according to a press release from the executive engineer, Chamundeswari Electricity Supply Corporation.

Killed in accident

HASSAN: The driver of a goods carrier, Manjunatha (25) from Honnenahalli, died on the spot in a collision involving the vehicle and a jeep near Hassan on Tuesday. Ramachandra, who was travelling in the goods carrier, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. Police investigation is on.

Suspended

HASSAN: Gorur Gram Panchayat secretary K.C. Keshave Gowda, who was arrested by the Lokayukta police for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs. 1,000, was placed under suspension by zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar on Wednesday. The Lokayukta police had arrested the gram panchayat secretary and produced him in court, which remanded him to judicial custody. On a report from the executive officer, Hassan Taluk Panchayat, Mr. Jamaadar placed him under suspension pending departmental inquiry.

Memorandum

HASSAN: Muslims from Gadde Hosahalli, Karigowdana Koppalu and Savanthanahalli under Shantigrama Hobli in Hassan taluk has appealed to Public Works and Energy Minister H.D. Revanna to remove encroachment on their burial ground. In a representation to the Minister here on Wednesday, they stated that 1.15-acre land was granted to the community for a burial ground in K. Hirehalli village under survey number 5. The land was handed over to Wakf Board by the Government and the document was registered. Despite this, a portion of the land was encroached upon. The Minister, who received the petition, directed Deputy Commissioner to take necessary action. — Staff Correspondent

Warship to be commissioned

KARWAR: Defence Minister, A.K. Antony, will dedicate INS Shardul, an indigenously built landing warship, to the nation on January 4. A fleet of warships including INS Virat, the only aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, will arrive at the base to witness the ceremony, according to sources at the Karwar Naval Base.

The Minister will interact with presspersons at Naval jetty just after the ceremony. INS Virat will then sail to Mumbai.

Four helicopters have been conducting surveillance around Karwar since Tuesday as a part of security arrangement.

Body found

PANAJI: Body of the Nagaland student, who drowned off Colva Beach in south Goa on Monday along with two of his colleagues, was found on Wednesday. Body of Vilasietvo (21), was traced on Wednesday and those of Ajungla Longchar (23) and Zajamo (22), were found on Tuesday. They were handed over to the family members, Colva Police told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Condemned

SIRSI: Uttar Kannada District Working Journalsits' Association has condemned the recent assault on two journalists in Dharwad and has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister here on Wednesday.

Earlier the activists of the association took out a protest on the streets of the town. In the memorandum, the Chief Minister has been urged to provide protection to journalists.

Hindu Samavesha

KARWAR: A Hindu Samavesha will be organised on Rabindranath Tagore beach on January 8 to mark the birth centenary celebration of Guruji Golvalkar, former RSS chief.

Honorary president and secretary of organising committee, U.K. Anvekar and Ravidra Powar said the celebration would begin with a Shobha Yatra. Pejawar Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji and seers of Krishnapur Math, Haldipur, Vaman Ashram and the head of Ramakrishna Ashram here would bless the people.
