A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION: A work by Surjit Akre

NEW DELHI: Surjit Akre, one of the renowned names in contemporary art, will showcase her paintings and drawings spanning over three decades at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture here from January 12.

The exhibition is being held to mark the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India. Surjit is the only Indian artist to have received her postgraduate degree from the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at St. Petersburg. She is also the founder and president of Roerich's Art Society.

The exhibition covers her work beginning from late 1970s, starting with her student years at St. Petersburg, till now.

The show presents a broad spectrum of Surjit's artistic creations.

"This collection of work is my individual journey, an artist's exploration," says Surjit. She underwent a rigorous programme in fine arts between 1973 and 1980 in the erstwhile Soviet Union. The influence of the Russian way of life is reflected prominently in her work.

The exhibition, she says, is an account of how both Indian and Russian cultures have shaped and inspired her. It is the intrinsic human moods that Surjit demonstrates through her paintings. Credited with a distinct personal profile, she has won different awards and honours as well as held a number of solo and group exhibitions.

Among her noted paintings are full-length oil on canvas painting of Indira Gandhi, portraits and images of rural life. Her colourful canvases explore the various aspects of womanhood -- of being the lover, wife, mother and a social being.

The Russian Ambassador to India, Vyacheslav I. Trubnikov, will inaugurate the exhibition on January 12. The show, on till January 27, is being organised in collaboration with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Gallery Pioneer and www.ishatart.com.
