A near-perfect day for Karnataka

Bangalore: With the shadows lengthening, C. Raghu rapped Hemang Badani's pads and found his appeal vindicated to top up a near perfect day for Karnataka against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match in progress at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.

Badani had attempted to sweep the off-spinner and seemed miffed with the verdict while the Karnataka players were jubilant as stumps were immediately drawn on the second day, leaving Tamil Nadu at 119 for four in reply to the host's 426.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu first innings suffered a poor start with the scoreboard remaining blank as opener Anirudha Srikkanth drove to mid-off and set off for a risky single. Debutant Gaurav Dhiman scooped up the ball and lobbed it at the non-striker's stumps to leave Anirudha stranded. The alarm bells were however quickly silenced by opener M. Vijay (48 n.o.) and R. Prasanna (39). The duo shared a 78-run second-wicket partnership rich with some aesthetic strokes. Southpaw Prasanna leant into his cover-drives and square-drove the seamers with aplomb while Vijay flicked Vinay Kumar for a silken four to hustle the scoreboard. Vijay looked unruffled though he did suffer a scare when his mistimed lofted drive off left-arm spinner K.P. Appanna was grassed by Dhiman at mid-off.

Partnership broken

The partnership snapped when Prasanna fell to K.P. Appanna, dabbing one to short-leg and the experienced duo of skipper S. Badrinath and Badani too failed to stretch their tenure. Badani, after elegantly driving Appanna twice through covers, failed to cash in and M. Vijay now has the tough task of cementing the Tamil Nadu innings along with S. Sharath besides hunting down Karnataka's first innings score on Thursday.

Earlier, the morning session belonged to allrounder B. Akhil (73, 101b, 13x4) who along with skipper Yere Goud (85, 249b, 15x4) helped Karnataka inch past the 400-mark. Akhil whetted his appetite, flicking Yomahesh past the ropes and his initial 32 runs all came through fours with a flurry of drives and cuts. The duo, after their 99-run eighth-wicket partnership, lost their timber to seamer Ganapathy but by then Karnataka had slipped into a dominant position.

During the lunch-break, both the teams observed a minute's silence in honour of Ashok Kumbhat, former TNCA secretary, who passed away in Chennai on Tuesday.
