Staff Reporter

Seven troupes taking part in the festival

BERHAMPUR: With the staging of the play 'Jhada', the week-long 16th `Dakhina Orissa natak mahotsav' started off at the Ganjam Kala Parishad auditorium of the city on Wednesday evening.

According to Nagendra Tripathy, the convener of the Ganjam Zilla Mancha Kalakar Sammilani, seven drama troupes from various parts of south Orissa would take part in this competitive drama festival.

The dramas were selected as per their scripts. Around 40 scripts had been submitted out of which the organisers chose seven.

Union Minister for State for Rural Development Chadrsekhar Sahu, State Minister for Energy, IT and Culture Suryanarayan Patro, general manager of the Berhampur edition of `The Sambad', Prasad Rao attended the inaugural session of this drama festival. The Maa Gram Devati Natya Sangh of Podamari of Ganjam district enacted the inaugural play, `Jhada', written by Himadri Ray. It was a satire aimed at the bureaucratic hassles that delay up the rescue and rehabilitation process after a natural holocaust. The backdrop of the play was the super cyclone that the State faced in 1999. A man gets stuck under an uprooted tree inside the campus of a government office. The play was directed by Dillip Bisoi.
