BHUBANESWAR: Chandigarh-based Pracheen Kala Kendra (PKK), deemed to be an open university of performing arts soon, has plans to set up its regional centres in Orissa, Assam, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir this year as part of its ongoing golden jubilee celebrations.
Cultural centres
It will further construct cultural centres with open-air theatres and hostels for students in selected cities in the country where such facilities do not exist. These centres will offer facilities for imparting training and holding concerts of classical dance and music. PKK registrar M.K. Koser announced this while addressing media here on Wednesday. He along with his dancer-wife Shobha Koser are in the State to host the annual convocation of the graduate and post-graduate students of Orissa in Puri on Sunday. The regional centre would be set up in Puri, Koser said and added that talks were on with the State Government for allocation of the required land. Of its 3,700 recognised schools of dance and music in the country, there were over 200 such institutions where nearly 15,000 students were being offered training in performing arts, he said. ``We were the first institution of the nation to recognise and promote Odissi music that is still striving for classical status. We are currently engaged in developing a syllabus for Odissi in Oriya language through translation,'' he said. The convocation ceremony will be held at Poura Sadan in Puri on Sunday at 10 am where renowned Odissi singer Paschimeswar Jena, versatile dramatist and actor Nityananda Mishra and senior feature writer of The Times of India, Chandigarh, Vandana Shukla will be honoured for their contribution to culture. The cultural evening will showcase sitar and vocal recital by Debaprasad Chakraborty and Ambarish Das respectively followed by Odissi ballet Sri Krishna Gatha by the artistes of Udayan Cultural Academy of Puri. Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi secretary D.D.Samantasinghara was also present on the occasion.
