Psychiatric ward inaugurated at Wenlock Hospital

NEW FACILITY: B. Udayashanker Shet, governor, Lions District 324-D5, inaugurating the Psychiatric ward at Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore on Wednesday.

MANGALORE: A psychiatric ward was inaugurated at Government Wenlock Hospital here on Wednesday.

It has been built at a cost of Rs. 3.5 lakh contributed by the Lioness District 324-D5.

There was a need for the ward in the hospital. It had been a matter of concern that we could not accommodate psychiatric patients in the hospital, Ravish Thunga, head of the department of Psychiatry, Kasturba Medical College, said after the inauguration.

The new wards would allow the hospital to admit patients for intensive psychiatric care, he said.

The hospital had approached the Government to release funds required for setting up the ward. But governmental procedures took time. The initiative taken by Uma Balakrishna Hegde, district lioness co-ordinator to set up the ward was laudable, Dr. Thunga said.

B. Udayashanker Shet, governor, Lions District 324-D5, inaugurated the ward.

Vinay Hegde, chairman of NITTE Education Trust, was the chief guest at the function. He said misconceptions about psychiatric patients, and their treatment persisted to this day. It was only through concerted efforts from health workers and voluntary organisations that such perceptions could be corrected, Mr. Hegde said.

J. Prabhudev, District Surgeon, thanked the lioness club for its contribution.
