CPI sarpanch attacked

First incident of pre-panchayat poll violence

BERHAMPUR: Pre-panchayat poll violence started in Ganjam district with an attack on the CPI sarpanch of Agastinuagaon under Chatrapur Assembly segment, A. Kaleya on Wednesday morning by four miscreants near the village.

Mr. Kaleya, who also happens to be the Chatrapur zonal committee member of the CPI, had to be shifted to the MKCG medical college hospital from Chatrapur hospital as his condition deteriorated. Search was launched for persons, but no one had been arrested till evening. The accused persons are believed to be hiding in cashew groves.

Dharna staged

CPI activists led by the CPI MLA of Chatrapur, N.Narayan Reddy staged a dharna in front of the office of the Ganjam district Collector at Chatrapur in the evening demanding immediate arrest of persons behind the attack. According to Mr Reddy, the Collector, Sanjay Singh has promised to get the culprits arrested within 48 hours.

Polling arrangements

There would be 6943 polling booths for the panchayat polls in Ganjam district, the largest district in the State in terms of population.

The district administration has started the preparation process for the panchayat polls which would be conducted in five phases in the district.

The district has three subdivisions and 22 blocks.

Filing of papers

The filing of nomination papers for all panchayat seats would continue from Jan 9 to Jan 15.

The Ganjam district administration has directed the Ganjam and Berhampur police districts to start a warrant drive to restrain the miscreants before the panchayat polls and to invoke the National Security Act (NSA) for the purpose if needed.
