Chennai : The excitement was palpable. Noisy chatter filled the grounds of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as hundreds of students from Chennai Corporation schools gathered for an annual sports meet on Wednesday. The students had no fancy sports jackets or shoes but that did not keep them away from the track. Many of them said they looked forward to the event every year. Mayor M. Subramanian inaugurated the event. He took the guard of honour when the students marched to drumbeats. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni encouraged the students to participate in all events. The students said they enjoyed their games period every week and had practised for the track and field events in the last few days. Many students from Standard X and XII had come to compete. "Our schools want X and XII Standard students to focus only on their academic studies. But I came because I am very interested in sports," said Villibai, a Plus-Two student of Market Street Girls School in Perambur. She won the third place in the 1,500-metre race for senior girls. About 1,100 students from 200 Corporation schools will take part in the sports meet, which concludes with a prize distribution ceremony on Thursday.
