"Directors should realise the importance of female comedians"

S.R. Ashok Kumar

I am not a melodrama enthusiast. I do not think I fit into such roles.

Actor Arthy

Arthy started her acting career as a child artist.

Today, she is a known face on television and in cinema as a young and upcoming comedy actor.

But behind the bubbly veneer is a serious person. Arthy talks about her plans for the future, as well as her likes and dislikes.

I am a jovial person who likes to smile and laugh all the time. I want to make others around me also laugh.

My parents are government employees.

I am pursuing my final year MBA in Meenakshi College and simultaneously preparing for the IAS preliminary exams.

I started acting at the age of three in `Vannakanavugal'. I am a K. Balachander discovery. He produced it and Ameer John directed it. While I was working in my first film, I got an opportunity to act in T. Rajendar's `En thangai Kalyani'.

Then I acted in movies such as `Shathriyan', `Thendral Sudum', `Rathathin Rathame', `Pillaikaga', `Anjali' and `Meenakshi Thiruvilaiyadal'. I did nearly 50 films as a child actor.

Later I took a long break, though I worked in serials on Doordarshan in between. My first film as an adult was `Arul'. I played Jyotika's sister. The hero of the movie was Vikram. As a comedian, I have done 23 films.

I have nothing against heroines, but I am not for running around trees and romancing. I want to do something that will appeal to everyone.

Today, everyone, particularly children, like me for my comedy roles. Tamil cinema, at present, does not have many women comedians. I gave it a try and have quite successful so far and wish to continue in the same line.

My most memorable roles are in `Giri', where I worked with Vadivelu, and my role in Sun Television's `Super Ten'.

I like all comedians. My favourites are Vadivelu, Manorama Achi, Kovai Sarala and the person who plays `Mr.Bean' in Pogo.

I want directors to give more opportunities to women comedy actors and realise their importance and the role they can play in films.

I am not a melodrama enthusiast. I do not think I fit into such roles. So I am choosy about roles in television programmes.

In television, I have done nearly 450 episodes of `Super Ten', Bhagyaraj's `Kathayin Kathai', where I played the heroine.

It went on to complete 410 episodes.

I recently visited Abu Dhabi. While waiting in the airport, I saw some Tamil workers there. They wanted to speak to me, but could not due to conduct rules. So I walked up to them and spoke to them.

That made their day. Each one appreciated my role in `Super Ten'.

That was best appreciation I got recently.
