TAMBARAM : Youth from seven districts of Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry are taking part in an army recruitment rally, which began at the Army Grounds in Pallavaram on Wednesday. The rally is being organised by Army Headquarters (Recruitment), Chennai. While selection would be for different grades, tests on Wednesday were conducted to ascertain the eligibility for the posts of soldier in different trades. Youth from Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Chennai, apart from the Union Territory of Puducherry are taking part. Colonel Gurvinder Singh, Director, Recruiting, Chennai, said candidates, who cleared the initial tests including those for physical and medical fitness, would be short-listed for the combined entrance examination. The final result would be released in February. Based on the aptitude, skills, overall merit and vacancies in the Army, the youth would be sent for training in the different training centres and posted anywhere in the Army's establishments. Stating that about 8,000 to 9,000 youth turned up for the rally, Col. Gurvinder Singh expressed his gratitude to the State Government for the wide publicity for the programme. He also thanked the Tambaram taluk office of the Kancheepuram district administration, the Pallavaram Municipality and personnel from the Pallavaram police stations for arrangements taken to tackle the large crowd. The tests are being held for youths in the 17-23 age group and youths, who have completed VII Standard, are eligible to apply for the various grades, the officials said.
