Overbridge at Melarannoor: MLA petitions Lalu Prasad

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram East MLA V. Sivankutty has submitted a petition to Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad asking for a road overbridge at Melarannoor, south of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station.

In his petition, Mr. Sivankutty has pointed out that the CTI Road linking Killippalam and Jagathy, a road that carries heavy traffic, experiences congestion due to the frequent closing of the level-crossing at Melarannoor. Also, there are a lot of important institutions such as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Ayurveda Hospital at Poojappura and the State Government Employees' Quarters near Melarannoor. The employees of the institutions are inconvenienced owing to the lack of an overbridge at Melarannoor, the petition said.

Although the Southern Railway authorities have been urged to construct a road overbridge on the spot, this is yet to be done. The petition requests the Union Minister to issue necessary directives in this regard and ensure that adequate funds are provided in the Railway budget of 2007-08.

In another petition to the Union Minister, Mr. Sivankutty has raised the water supply, drainage and transportation problems faced by the 1,000-odd people who surrendered land to the Railways for track electrification and other work in 2004.

Though at a meeting held on December 22, 2004, the Railway divisional authorities had, through a "gentleman's agreement," agreed to look into such problems nothing has been done so far. The condition of the roads at Jyothipuram is very bad, the petition points out.
