Doctor attacked, clinic damaged

Staff Reporter

Attack linked to death of a girl

Thiruvananthapuram: A 12-member gang attacked a 42-year-old doctor, Mohan Kumar, inside his private clinic at Muttathara on Wednesday morning. The miscreants, suspected to be Democratic Youth Front of India (DYFI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists from Balwan Nagar, terrorised patients and damaged medical equipment, the local police said.

The incident occurred at 9 a.m. The gang members arrived in front of `Sai Clinic' near Perunelli junction on the Kazhakuttam-Kovalam National Highway Bypass. They stormed into the consulting room and assaulted Dr. Mohan Kumar. The miscreants damaged diagnostic equipment, including a stethoscope and blood pressure gauge. They smashed medicine bottles and chased away patients. The youth had fled the spot by the time the police arrived. So, far none have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Circle Inspector, Poonthura, Suresh Kumar said the attack on the clinic was linked to the death of an 18-year-old girl hailing from Balwan Nagar. The girl, who died of `intra-cerebral haemorrhage' in a private hospital at Fort, had been initially treated at Sai Clinic, he said. Dengue is suspected to be the cause of the girl's death.

The police suspect that the persons who attacked the doctor included some of the girl's relatives and few anti-social elements hailing from Balwan Nagar.

When contacted, Dr. Mohan Kumar said that the girl had come for treatment at his clinic. After assessing her condition, he had referred the girl to the private hospital at Fort for specialised medical care. The girl had been treated at the hospital for more than a day before she died. He said some doctors at the private hospital had impressed upon the girl's relatives that it was his wrong diagnosis that resulted in the death. He said his clinic had come under attack in the early hours of Monday by the members of the same gang.

Meanwhile, the Poonthura police have registered a case of assault, unlawful assembly, trespass, causing damage to property and rioting against the suspects.

No person has so far been named as accused in the First Information Report.
