Target unlikely to be met for zero sewage flow zone plan

Deadline of January 26 not feasible, say HMWSSB officials

  • Works on Chaderghat-Puranapul should have been completed by September
  • The Rs. 339.08-crore Save Musi plan encompasses intercepting sewage flow

HYDERABAD: The January 26 target set for Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) officials to make the Musi stretch between Chaderghat and Puranapul a zero sewage flow zone appears improbable.

The HMWSSB managing director K.S. Jawahar Reddy, releasing the engineering staff diary, had given the call to complete the zero sewage flow plan by Republic Day. However, HMWSSB officials on conditions of anonymity contend that the deadline was not feasible and that it could take more time.

Works on the Chaderghat-Puranapul stretch were to have been completed by September last.

At a review meeting convened by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in mid-2006, MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju had disclosed that intercepting trunk sewers were laid for a distance of 2.80 km on the north bank and 2.5 km along the south bank between Puranapul and Chaderghat after clearing riverbed encroachments. The Rs. 339.08-crore Save Musi plan encompasses intercepting sewage flow from 18 open nalas on either side of the river, diverting them through conveying mains to the sewage treatment plants and releasing the treated water into the river after attaining river disposable standards.

The plan also involves increasing the sewage treatment capacity of the HWMSSB system to 592 Million Litres per Day - Amberpet (339 MLD), Nagole (172 MLD), Nallacheruvu and Nandimusalaiguda (30 MLD) each, Jiaguda (21 MLD). "About 70 per cent of the works on trunk sewer mains have been completed ," a HMWSSB official explained.
