KOCHI: Employment generation in Ernakulam district, which saw rapid growth during the 1990s and touched a low in 2003, is expected to go up significantly during the coming years, said a study conducted by the International Centre for Economic Policy and Analysis (ICEPA), part of the Department of Applied Economics, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). The reference to the employment generation potential in the district is part of a comprehensive study of the industrial potential especially for small industries, in the district. The study was taken up at the instance of the Industries Department through the District Industries Centre (DIC) to assess the potential of each of the blocks in the district. Thanks to several projects coming into the implementation mode in Ernakulam, employment generat ion will improve considerably. Signs of it were available in 2004 when expected fresh employment generation was to the tune of 1,62,206, an expected growth of more than 2 per cent over the previous year, said the study. It said the secondary and tertiary sectors accounted for the large majority of employment in the district with cultivators forming just 5.25 per cent of the workforce in the district and agriculture labourers forming 7.79 per cent of the workforce. The study also pointed out that among the job seekers in the general category in the district, the number of women exceeded the number of men by 47.63 per cent. This, said the study, could be an indication that women would find it harder to find jobs in categories that do not require special skills.
